RD 2 The story
Constantin & Marlee
October 2018: an 18-year-old from Chișinău arrived in Devon with no money, no job and no English. He came for a one-month training camp. Nearly eight years later he is still in Plymouth, still with Marlee.
He lived in the gym office at Intense for more than six months and turned pro in November 2019, at the Guildhall in the city that had taken him in. He was the first boxer Marlee turned professional. Marlee was an amateur coach who moved into the professional game for him: “If I was turning professional, it was for the right reasons. Constantin Ursu was the reason. I knew he would be champion.” Then came years on the small-hall circuit with no TV and no major promoter, winning every time.
Southern Area and Commonwealth Silver titles followed in 2023, then the Commonwealth belt at York Hall in March 2025, the WBO European title that November, and the British title in Derby in February 2026 on his first DAZN main event.
“I actually only came for a one-month training camp. But this has been nearly eight years now.”
